Order of Vespers by Elyse Reyes

I went into Order of Vespers blindly. I usually try and read either the synopsis or a review to familiarize myself with what I’ll be reading. But I didn’t with this book. And I’m so happy that I did.

We meet Jasper Lee Andrews as she’s recovering from a bomb explosion at her school. One where she is the main suspect. She was found on the scene, unconscious and not hurt; which no one can seem to explain.

When she’s finally able to go home, we discover that Jasper as well as her twin brother Jude and older sister Olivia had special abilities. But because of the danger that it could cause, they have to keep that little secret under lock and key. Exposing their family would mean devastating consequences for anyone involved. She’s in no light terms told by her parents that some “people” will be picking her up, for her own safety, and that she would be staying with them indefinitely. As she’s wandering around her house, her home is attacked by an unforeseen force. When she finally manages to get herself back up and moving, it’s only to discover that her entire family is missing/ gone. She’s not sure what has happened, only that she can’t find them.

The same officers and detectives that had attempted to arrest her earlier that day were the ones that showed up at her house. And because they’re already in doubt of her and her “acts of terrorism” they believe her to be responsible for the 2nd explosion. She’s taken to jail, where she later manages to escape.

It’s when she’s on the run that the story picks up and we discover what the deal with her abilities are.

I found this book intriguing. Full of suspense and found myself comparing Jasper and some of the other characters to those of X-Men. The best part - there is a love interest, but it’s not completely overpowering. I think that I enjoyed that mostly over everything. They literally danced around each other. Not sure if they could even consider each other friends. But knowing that there was something there.

I’m definitely curious to find out if Elyse will be writing a 2nd book, as I feel that this one ended in a cliff-hanger. I was impressed with her writing style and character development. And was thoroughly pleased with the world that she created, because even though it was in present time, the elements that she offered made them more believable. I definitely believe that this is a 5 Star Book, as I couldn’t put it down, and couldn’t get enough of it!
